A Survivor Is Born: TheLunarSyn Streamer Review
Luna has been on my radar for upcoming streaming stars for a while now. It is incredible when we meet new faces within the gaming community and even more so when that streamer has a story that really shows what kind of a fighter they are.
I found Luna really early on when I started my twitter account, as I was looking for gamers with the same kind of interests I have. Anyone who knows me knows that I love horror-survival games, so naturally, Resident Evil is on the list. It wasn’t long before I found out Luna is a Master at everything Resident Evil!
Casually popping into her stream I could see that we had a lot in common with the games we play and it’s relaxing to sometimes just watch someone else play the games you like. One of the most recent playthroughs was with Resident Evil: Revelations (still one of the games I want to try myself) and I was totally captivated from start to finish of the playthrough. For those of you who don’t know RE: Revelations was originally released on 3DS so it’s a game many fans might have accidentally missed out on. The story is essentially Jill stranded on a boat trying to survive fish zombies.
Luna is a killer shot, watching her dash, duck and dive through enemies is incredibly fun and watching her rank high on the scoreboard is really cool! Somehow watching her pull off all this with ease is completely mesmerizing. You hardly notice the time go by! Believe me, I’ve played a lot of Resident Evil games but I never get close to and A or S rank, let alone try and attempt a speedrun.
As I kept dropping by her streams and chatting with her, I recently learned that Luna is not only a survivor of zombies, treasure hunters or templars but she has had quite an intense battle of her own. For years she has been fighting a war with her own body as she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma stage 2. If you don’t know all the terminology, it is essentially cancer of the white blood cells. I can only try and imagine how Luna must have felt at the age of 21 getting diagnosed. In her own words, she said it left like her life was over, ripped to pieces.
It was late December 2018 when she was rushed to the hospital for an elevated heart rate. Unfortunately, many people thought it was stress at first and brushed it off as nothing too serious. It is absolutely shocking to me that doctors will often overlook elevated heart rates as stress or anxiety. It was only when she went to surgery that they later found out she had stage two cancer. It must have been world-shattering after receiving the news, especially after all the ups and downs of so many doctors telling her it was something else.
Not long after she was sent for her first round of chemotherapy and I’m sure it was an experience she won’t easily forget. Luna told me that she was unable to feel her arm due to the chemicals. Having to sit there alone for 3 to 4 hours while the treatment took place must have been really tough as I’m sure every life choice, decision or missed opportunity raced through her mind.
Waking up every morning to hair loss and watching as your body slowly changes can scar anyone. Luna explained that she would sometimes cover her own mirror as she couldn’t bear to look at herself and had to go through two wigs, which she hated at first.
Thankfully her dad came to her rescue with some video games while she had was going through chemo. She has always loved gaming and this was something that could help her take her mind off the pain and the isolation she was going through. Being a part of a different world and being a part of a character’s struggles are the thing that helped her cope. She was able to place herself in their situation and try and learn from them. I think it’s safe to say that seeing the character development in the games she was playing helped Luna shape her mind and in a way gave her the strength to become the young strong individual she is today. I think a lot of gamers can agree that video games can have a massive impact on our lives at the times we least expect it.
And like many of the video games that we play the hero of the story wins in the end, becoming stronger and braver than they use to be. For Luna, this is exactly the case! She says that she still does have the fear and worries about her cancer returning but I’m really happy to say that she has recovered and is now living her life to the fullest!! She is also working hard on spreading awareness and telling her story about how video games helped her through a very difficult time in her life. I for one am really glad to see that she overcame her cancer and that she never gave up fighting through this difficult chapter in her life!
Luna, it has been an absolute privilege to get to know you and watching you play video games and experiencing life is wonderful. Thank you for allowing me to share your story and I look forward to watching you grow and take the world by storm!!
