5 Video Games You Should NEVER Play In Front Of Your Parents Or Partner
We have all had that awkward moment where we wish our parents didn’t walk past our room or decide to sit with us as we try and play a new game. If it’s a game you haven’t played before it’s doubly scary, purely because we’re unaware of what might happen next as we play through the game. This can lead to some pretty awkward explaining if you reach a raunchy cutscene or something that your parents think is ‘too gory’. So in honor of all the people who have been caught out and put in embarrassing situations here is a list of games you should avoid playing in front of your parents and partner at all costs!
1. Duke Nukem Forever
Duke will forever remind me of a much older Johnny Bravo, but far worse when it comes to charming the ladies. I was first introduced to Duke Nukem when I was very little and as I recall I was told not to play this game by my parents. They didn’t want me to experience Duke’s personality as he’s very belittling to the females in the game. It doesn’t help that they’re shown as weak, small minded individuals who only had sexytimes on their mind. As a little girl then I didn’t really understand but now I’m older I can see how my parents would have felt embarrassed about the game and how it portrayed some characters.
As an adult, I can agree that this is a game I would hate to play in front of younger generations! And as a young teenager, I would have died on the spot if my parents saw me play it!! It’s still an okay game, and for better or worse Duke has become somewhat of an icon in the video game world.
2. Catherine
Just by looking at the cover of the game, anyone could see why you should not be playing this game with anyone around. While I haven’t played it I can’t truly know what to expect, as such I can’t really say much about the game other than mention the plot.
The idea of the game is that Vincent meets Catherine, a beautiful blond bombshell, BUT he is already in a 5 year relationship Katherine who wants to get married. Vincent then starts feeling the pressure after he starts cheating on his girlfriend (which nobody should be doing or things like this happen!!)
Long story short, he starts having really bad nightmares about sheep and escaping weird puzzles that could kill him, and if he gets killed in his sleep he REALLY dies.
Not going to lie, the game looks really interesting however I will definitely not be playing this game in front of my loved ones as I don’t really want to have that kind of talk and explaining with my parents over the kind of games I play.
3. My Horse Prince
The picture says it all…… My Horse Prince is a mobile Japanese Otome game and from what I’ve heard it is one of THE BEST virtual dating sim games currently out there. I’ve played my fair share of virtual novel games but nothing as weird as this one!! And although I should probably not judge a game by its cover, I doubt I will be playing this anytime soon. This one would be incredibly hard to explain to my parents!!
So let’s just jump into the plot as told by the developers. The story follows your avatar, a young businesswoman who has been working really hard her entire career, she doesn’t have a “knight in shining armor” and decides to leave her job and go on a bit of an adventure… visiting a racing horse ranch with the hopes of finding a handsome man there.
However, she finds far more than she bargained for, and soon a unique story blossoms.
Don’t take my word for it, My Horse Prince was voted the best mobile game of 2016 and mobile gamers went crazy over the game.
4. Playboy: The Mansion
I literally don’t even have to explain this one! You can already imagine why you wouldn’t want to be playing this one in front of friends and family.
From what I’ve seen through screenshots the game actually reminds me a lot of the Sims franchise. The plot of the story is fairly simple, build your playboy empire and make it a success.
If I had this game lying around when my parents walked in I can tell you that no matter how old I am this would not be allowed.
5. Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball
To this day I have NEVER heard of this expansion of the game and I could have lived quite happily without knowing it existed. Dead Or Alive Beach Volleyball edition is a game that I will definitely not be playing. This is nothing like the classic DOA games which were about becoming the strongest and best fighter in the world. I remember spending hours playing the original and trying to beat the survival mode.
The concept of video games like this actually sparks a bit of anger in me because I worry that this is how video game developers see girls. Just as a bunch of sexy pixels for guys to drool over.
Although the gaming industry is changing and developers are focusing on representing strong female leads I still cannot help but feel slightly disappointed. Imagine a little girl finding a video game like this lying around. I can tell you now that my console would have been out of the window faster than I can say “it’s just a game”
There are so many games out there that I’m sure I missed out on some games that are waaaayyy more awkward to have loved ones find you playing. But these are the 5 games I would not advise anyone to play in front of, or in close proximity to their parents or partners. If you do, it could strike up a VERY interesting conversation you would have probably wanted to avoid!
Have I missed anything you might have played and wished you never got caught playing? What has been your most awkward gaming moment? Please share with me in the comments… if you are brave enough :)
Lots of Love
Postal 2 (not to be confused with Portal 2). The game feels like it was made to offend as many people as possible. Either that or it was made purely as a joke😅
THE GRISAIA TRILOGY on Switch is what I hear something one should not play in front of anyone as it is one hectic visual novel.
