Kitanya_is_Here: The High-Energy Angler Fish VTuber Taking Over the World
It’s not every day I get to write an article about someone I have looked up to and admired for as long as I can remember.
And when I finally had the courage to ask if I could write about her, I was filled with excitement and nerves. The night I sent the message, I anxiously avoided my phone the next day, too scared to see the response. When I finally opened it, my heart swelled and skipped a beat—she said yes!
So here I am, trying to find the right words to capture just how perfect she is and how wonderful she has been to me… and honestly, it’s harder than I expected.
These kinds of articles are always the hardest for me because I want to put all my admiration on paper for everyone to read without sounding like a total fangirl.
Many of you may not know this, but Kitanya_is_here is a South African vtuber, known for her vibrant, fun, and welcoming streams.
She has built a dynamic community on Twitch and YouTube, where she creates highly interactive content. Her streams are full of energy, laughter, and engaging conversations, making her a standout personality in the vtuber scene.
She has dedicated her time to creating a comfortable space for her viewers (who she affectionately calls Max) while seamlessly blending in bursts of high energy.
She loves engaging in lively discussions, often turning casual streams into spontaneous, hilarious experiences. Whether it’s playing games, chatting, or experimenting with new content, Kitanya’s enthusiasm keeps viewers entertained and coming back for more.
When I first started vtubing, I had no idea there were any South African vtubers—some might have even assumed I was the first (I wasn’t!).
As I began streaming, I was introduced to another cheerful, positive streamer, who is friends with Kitanya. AND SO I ended up meeting Kitanya for the first time on her stream.
From the very beginning, she captivated me—her energy, kindness, and passion for vtubing were truly inspiring. She embodied everything I aspired to be as a vtuber and streamer.
Despite my inexperience, she took the time to offer me advice, patiently explaining things in detail and looking out for me as a newcomer, helping with answering all my questions.
Her kindness and generosity meant the world to me, and I will always be grateful for the guidance she gave me.
As I have gotten to know Kitanya through her streams, I wanted to introduce her to some of you who may not know her…yet!
So when I asked Kitanya how her background as a South African vtuber has influenced her content, she gave a thoughtful response.
While she doesn’t feel her background directly shaped her content, she believes the way she was raised influenced how she treated people and engaged with her community early on. However, it was her experience as a streamer that had the biggest impact on her content and interaction style. She feels incredibly lucky to have such a kind and understanding community, even humbly saying, “They say, ‘the chat reflects the streamer,’ which I have always felt was much too high praise for me.”
Kitanya’s journey as a vtuber has been filled with exciting transformations, with her most recent rebrand being one of the most iconic. Her transition from a cat girl to an anglerfish might seem like a drastic change, but for Kitanya, rebranding was always about creativity rather than necessity. Unlike many vtubers who see rebrands as a major risk, she never viewed them the same way.
Instead, her changes were fueled by evolving skills, different artists, and her shifting views on branding.
She initially wanted to be a fox girl but became a cat girl due to her early limitations in 3D modeling. As she improved and could afford an artist, she returned to her fox concept.
Over time, new artists and new creative inspirations led to further changes, including a hero concept before finally landing on her current angler fish persona. With experience and confidence, she decided this would be her final transformation, marking a new era of her vtuber career. Now, with a solidified brand, she’s more focused than ever on her goals and it shows in her success and it’s just simply put inspiring.
Since Kitanya now embodies an angler fish, I had to ask: If she found herself surviving in the deep sea as a real angler fish, what’s the first thing she’d do? Her answer was exactly the kind of response you’d expect from someone as playful as her:
“I would immediately try to turn my lure on and off and on and off and on and off and on and off and….”
It’s this kind of chaotic humor that makes her streams so entertaining!
One of the most endearing things about Kitanya is the bond she shares with her community she calls Max. When asked what Max would sound like if they could only be described using sound effects, her response was both hilarious and slightly menacing:
“Max would sound like they are crying while making ‘UUUUUU’ noises! It’s extremely cute (makes me want to make them cry more)!!”
If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about the playful chaos of her streams, I don’t know what will!
Lastly, I had to ask Kitanya one of my favorite weird questions: If she could have one absurd superpower, what would it be? Her answer was pure comedic genius:
“My absurd superpower would be summoning an elephant in the room every time I make a pun or bad joke, so that I could repeat the cycle by pointing to the elephant in the room. Endless elephants.”
I can already picture an entire herd of elephants appearing in her streams as she drops pun after pun, creating an infinite loop of chaos.
Kitanya, all I want to say is… the future looks brighter than ever for you our South African streamer.
