Unveiling Terror: Navigating the Haunting Mysteries of ‘The Quarry as told by H4v0cH3lls1ng

Many who know me understand I’m not one for horror games. It’s a genre I don’t find enjoyable to play, especially when alone in a dimly lit room with my dogs snoozing under the desk.
Strangely though, I do find entertainment in horror movies and watching others struggle through spine-chilling games. But spending hours in front of my PC playing one? That’s not really my cup of tea.

However, when H4voc mentioned that ‘The Quarry’ would be the next game on his streaming list after a hiatus, I couldn’t help but wonder if it would be another title I’d dislike watching. H4voc is known for dashing through a massive Steam library, especially during his time off, completing a game a day.
Out of all the story-based adventures he’s shared recently, ‘The Quarry’ really grabbed my attention the most in the past couple of weeks.

In 2022, “The Quarry,” a horror video game made by Supermassive Games and published by 2K, leads players through a thrilling and suspenseful adventure. With MORE than a hundred and fifty possible endings, every decision shapes the outcome of the game.

The game introduces players to a diverse cast of playable characters, each with distinct personalities and backgrounds. Notably, the voices and faces might ring a bell from their appearances on the big screen, including Brenda Song, Lance Henriksen (a pleasant surprise for me; I adore his voice), Justice Smit, Ariel Winter, and many more!
As the story unfolds, players take on the roles of these characters, guiding their connected stories and making choices that have a big impact on the game, giving us those spine-tingling moments.

Our story unfolds with Max and Laura, two camp coordinators en route to Hackett’s Quarry. During their journey, they encountered a startling obstacle on the road. Laura believed it to be a person, while Max was convinced it was a deer in the road. In an effort to avoid a collision, Max swerved off the road, and the car ended up stranded. Max stays to fix the car, while Laura, against the better judgment of any survival horror guide, decides to investigate what they ‘hit’ on the road. Predictably, she goes alone.
Without giving away too much, let’s just say that Max and Laura’s intended trip to summer camp took an unexpected turn.

Our story skips to the present and as the camp draws to a close and the coordinators prepare to leave, we meet other key characters in our story. Our group includes a variety of individuals, each with their special traits and talents:

  • Emma is a popular and beautiful influencer.
  • Jacob is a playful strong character who harbors feelings for Emma.
  • Abigail is a quiet and socially awkward girl.
  • Dylan is unexpectedly very tech-savvy.
  • Kaitlyn is a sharp-tongued yet natural leader.
  • Ryan, the loner with something to prove.
  • Nick, is the nerdy athlete struggling with self-expression.

The supposedly final day at camp takes a grim turn when Jacob, in a final attempt to save his already over relationship, tampers with the only means of transportation, hoping for one more night with Emma. This decision leaves the group stranded at the isolated and seemingly lifeless quarry and its surroundings.

Throughout the game, players face crucial choices that significantly impact ALL the characters’ fates and the direction of the story. Each decision carries weight, potentially altering the course and leading to diverse endings.

Right from the start, the game establishes a spine-chilling atmosphere. The desolate quarry and its eerie landscapes serve as the central stage for the unfolding horror. With the scary encounters, mysteries, and supernatural elements, one unsettling aspect that stood out was the game’s stunning appearance. The landscapes and character designs, despite some of their facial flaws, were breathtaking. It’s a peculiar feeling when something unsettling appears so stunning on screen.

“The Quarry” proved to be one of the most spellbinding video game playthroughs I watched in 2023. Watching H4voc tackle the game with a cool and collected demeanor added to the thrill. Experiencing the game through someone else’s eyes made me feel slightly bolder, prompting me to add it to my Steam wish list. Whether I’d ever have the courage to play it myself, who knows? Highly unlikely.

H4v0c is truly a great streamer and I found it somewhat exciting waiting for a jumpscare to catch up with the streamer or a scream to be let out. The commentary does not leave one unsatisfied as it felt like H4v0c played right into the game’s own commentator’s hands. Adding both chills and comfort during tough tight encounters.

If you’re a fan of horror games packed with chilling choices, I wholeheartedly recommend “The Quarry.” But for those, like me, who are a bit timid, there’s no shame in experiencing the game through someone else’s eyes.
