12 Movies for the 12 Days of Christmas
It’s that time of year again where all we see is green, red, and white and all the good boys and girls getting ready to celebrate Christmas!
So to get us all into the festive spirit for 2020’s Christmas let’s all watch some classic (and some new) Christmas movies together!
I haven’t watched some of these in years and some I only watched this year, but here are just a few cheerful movies to awaken the spirit of Christmas :)
How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
How can I not mention the classic Christmas story of How The Grinch Stole Christmas? The story follows the Grinch who has been wronged when he was little because he was different. Allowing his hatred to grow he decides to one day steal Christmas and with that all the happiness of the people from Whoville.
With the help of his dog Max his plan is set in motion, however, a very grumpy Grinch finds that it will not be as easy as he thinks it’s going to be when he meets a young Who named Cindy Lou.
The Grinch is definitely a movie that is to be watched every Christmas as it’s a movie that will be enjoyed by the whole family!
Holidate (2020)
The story follows Sloane who hates holidays because she is tired of her family pushing her to get into a serious relationship and Jackson a young golfer who is tired of spending his holidays with girls he has no interest in. The two meet while returning presents they received the day after Christmas. After they share their situations with one another, Sloane tells him about her aunt’s “Holidates” and Jackson suggests that they become each other’s holidate. Therefore supporting each other as well as pleasing her parents about her relationship status.
This gets complicated when ex’s get involved, as well as new feelings for each other, but we all know that Christmas is about bringing people together even if it’s not how we all plan…
The Christmas Chronicles 2 (2020)
Now in her teens, Kate has reunited with Santa once again after someone threatens to take away Christmas forever.
On holiday with her family, Kate decides to run away back home where it would feel more like Christmas than spending it with her family and her mother’s new boyfriend. On the shuttle, she discovers that Jack (her mother’s boyfriend’s son) has followed her and the two are transported to the North Pole by the driver Nesnickel, a jealous angry elf who turned human and ran away from the North Pole.
Kate and Jack now have to work together and help save Christmas from the evil elf who threatens to destroy Christmas forever!!
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
The Nightmare Before Christmas is probably one of the biggest classics on everyone’s Christmas must watch list each year and there are very few people who haven’t watched the movie.
The story follows Jack Skellington, a being from Halloween town, where he is meant to scare little girls and boys. However, with each passing day, boredom soon starts setting in and Jack starts wandering around. He soon finds the Christmas Town and is enchanted by its endless possibilities. It all quickly takes a turn for the worse when his obsession with Christmas grows and he plans to kidnap Santa so he can try to take a turn at delivering Christmas cheer.
Holiday in the Wild (2019)
Like all of the other movies on the list, this is about Christmas, giving, sharing, and reconnecting with others, even if that is when your husband decides to call it quits. That’s exactly what happened to Kate when her husband ended their marriage.
To try and cope with the stress, the heartbreak, and the embarrassment Kate decides to go on her second honeymoon alone. It is there where she meets the stubborn yet determined pilot, Derek, and a baby elephant which changes her life forever. Soon she is taken in by the new meaning of giving and making sacrifices.
This movie is like nothing else on this list as it also highlights the beauty of Africa’s nature and wildlife. I personally enjoyed this one and I can see how I will keep watching it for the next few years. It truly was a movie that warmed my heart and made me shed some tears.
A Miracle On 34th Street (1994)
Everyone is skeptical when it comes to Santa Claus, so nobody was surprised when 6 year old Susan questioned the existence of Santa and what he does. Susan soon meets a kind and caring old man named Kris Kringle who is filling in for an intoxicated Santa at the parade.
With his kind and caring nature for everyone he soon wins over the hearts of everyone he meets. However, it all comes to an end when he makes a powerful statement claiming he really is Santa Claus.
People quickly jump into action and Mr. Kris (aka Santa) is taken to court to verify his claim as well as to find out if he might not be suffering from mental health problems. The young Susan, who is now a believer, stands by Santa’s side alone with her mother and the lawyer tasked to prove Santa’s innocence.
Rise of the Guardians (2012)
Rise of The Guardians has it all! From Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman, to the tooth fairy. Everyone is here! However this story follows the unknown tale of Jack Frost, a spirit tasked with saving the Guardians from being forgotten as a new threat arises in the form of Pitch Black who wants to destroy children’s beliefs in their favorite guardians.
The story of Rise Of The Guardians is about believing in yourself and standing up for those beliefs. The perfect story to inspire the younger generations and get mom or dad smiling as we see our favorite holidays characters fight against evil.
A Wonderful Life (1946)
This is a ‘darker’ addition to the list as we follow the story of George Bailey with more problems than solutions and one day he decides that he has had enough and it was time to end it. This is the perfect movie to watch when you need to take a step back and look at the past year and the things you have accomplished.
Just as George is about to jump he ends up rescuing a life instead, the life of his guardian angel who decides to take him back into the past to show him everything he has done for others and for his hometown.
A touching message that reminds us that we are going to have ups and downs but we should never forget the people who supported us and celebrate our small victories.
Elf (2003)
Ever wanted to work side by side with Santa? Well, the movie Elf shows us just as it would have been like to be one of Santa’s little helpers. The movie follows the story of Buddy, as a baby Buddy was wrongly transported to the North Pole and raised as an elf.
However, Buddy did not quite feel like he belonged and decided to go and find his real family. After finally tracking down his father, Buddy is met by a cold-hearted businessman who has no holiday cheer.
The story of Elf follows the two very different individuals building a relationship and reminding us that Christmas is about the joy of others and family with the bonus of making us laugh and smile, leaving us with a warm feeling.
the Polar Express (2004)
Like many children, we all become very skeptical about Santa Claus and so this time we follow a young boy who takes a very unbelievable train ride to the North Pole after struggling to fall asleep.
After hesitating to get onboard the train the boy takes a leap of faith and jumps onboard. Here he meets other kids and they go on the adventure of remembering what Christmas is about.
The Polar Express is a story about believing and is the perfect movie that will warm all hearts and this list would feel incomplete without adding a story about believing in Santa.
Die Hard 2 (1990)
Christmas has been hijacked and the only person who can save us is John McClane. Who says action movies can’t be Christmassy and cheery?
Definitely a move away from the more traditional Christmas movies on the list, I honestly don’t think Christmas would be complete without watching John save his wife and everyone else at their Christmas eve dinner party!
Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)
Jingle Jangle is a wonderfully heartwarming story about a troubled toymaker whose life gets turned upside down when his granddaughter shows up.
It is up to her to save the day and inspire her uncle, the world’s greatest toymaker who has suffered the betrayal of his apprentice (who happened to steal his most prized toy). It’s up to our toymaker’s granddaughter to reawaken his magic and save Christmas.
This movie is filled with all the latest jingles that will get you singing along for years to come.
BONUS MOVIE:
FatMan (2020)
Now I haven’t watched Fatman yet, but from the trailer, it looks absolutely insane! The story follows Santa fighting for his survival and on the run from a professional hitman who was hired by a young boy who found a lump of coal in his stocking. The boy who is the son of a gang leader will do anything he can to get his revenge on Santa for ruining his Christmas.
If you are looking for action, adventure, and laughter then this movie absolutely has to be added to your list!
All these movies, old and new, are sure to get you singing your Christmas songs, wearing your ugliest jumpers, and inspiring you to take out the decorations to start spicing up your home before the big day arrives!
So hopefully in this list, you’ll have found a show for everyone to enjoy. Feel free to join me for the next 12 days of Christmas as I sit back, with my feet up and drink a cold soda (because it’s hot here) and enjoy a movie every day until Christmas!
Lots of Love
